I have always liked rugby, I played for a long time and I have always enjoyed watching it, so, with the 6 Nations fast approaching I thought it might be quite interesting to share the experiences of an Englishman living in Wales during the 6 Nations.
Growing up in England rugby wasn’t the main focus so it was a nice change when I moved to Wales and saw the atmosphere in Cardiff on a match day, it’s brilliant. It’s especially good when England come to town.
I am English (despite having a Welsh Mother) and have always supported England, so obviously I knew of the rivalry between the two teams long before I moved to Wales, but it still surprised me how passionate the Welsh fans are.
The Welsh want to beat the English as much as the English want to beat the Welsh, but in my opinion there is nothing better on match day than mixing with the Welsh fans and watching the rugby, enjoying a few beers and accepting the result whichever way it may go, after all none of us can actually affect the result, so we might as well enjoy it! That is one of the best things about rugby, ‘rival’ fans can mix and spend the day together, and enjoying a sport we all love.
I will admit I have had some uncomfortable experiences whilst supporting England and living in Wales, most notably in 2013 when Wales tore England apart with a 30-3 win at the Millennium Stadium which handed Wales the title and ended England’s Grand Slam hopes. I watched the game with a good friend of mine, who is Welsh and as the game wore on, he got more and more exited and I got quieter and quieter – mainly due to my over confidence before the start of the game about how much England we going to win by! I learnt my lesson that day and I now keep my predictions to myself!
This year Wales obviously have the bragging rights following England’s poor World Cup but with a change of management and a new look England team I think the game will be a very good occasion and I’m really looking forward to it, but I won’t be making a score prediction – not in writing any way!
